Mature Student Mentors

Program:  
I am a 4th-year BA student in Information Technology within the Faculty of LA&PS. I am a part-time, mature, transfer, and immigrant student at York.

Future Goals:
Applying to graduate studies and create a website that attracts a large number of users.

Background: 
As a York student, I received several scholarships and awards during my learning journey. I was offered the opportunity to receive the NSERC USRA Undergraduate Research Award for 2022. Those awards have encouraged me to do my best in my studies and in my life. I am grateful to all the faculty members who have given me opportunities, nominations, and recognition. In addition to learning about leadership, my ultimate goal, through my various involvement at York, was to help build the self-esteem of the attendants with confidence, courage, and hope.

I am comfortable assisting students because I understand the difficulties they may face in their studies. Through e-mail, I shared with them some learning tips and upcoming events to assist students with weak learning skills.

Hobbies/interests:  
Over the years of my studies at York University, I have attended various events, workshops and conferences offered by different organizations.

I volunteer with LA&PS, Active Minds and have worked with York University's Accessibility Services. I thoroughly enjoyed volunteering and was delighted with my contributions.

Before studying at York University, I thought I had no social skills. To enhance my social skills, I became a leader in some student organizations. I was not, however, sufficiently proficient in English to communicate my plans to the members of the club. Subsequently, I joined several after-school activities, which gave me a strong motivation to improve my language and communication skills.

Advice for mentees: 
I am volunteering as a Peer Mentor, a senior who helps mature students with advice and their questions. I understand what it's like to be a junior, and I want to make your life easier by assisting and providing you with any sort of information or guidance you need. You will probably end up spending a lot of your time, both for academic and social purposes, at York, so it's critical that you feel safe and relaxed. I fully understand if you are experiencing a bittersweet feeling right now! Universities are a whole different world, and it's a huge step to take when you've been out of high school for so long. Even if you are not starting your first year out of high school, starting anything new in life is always a challenge. But that is why I am here! I am here to make this transition as smooth and easy as possible. It’s my job to help you.

Program:
Honours B.A., 4th year student of Psychology. Concentrating in Developmental Psychology and Neuropsychology.

Background:
 I’ve been attending York for 5 years, and I’m beginning my 6th year. As a mature student, I understand the struggles of working full-time and navigating academia. I’ve worked in many fields prior to enrolling at York in 2020 (the year of COVID-19, when all our courses were online). From working on Bay Street, logistics and manufacturing, and working in hospitality, both front and back of house. Observing some of my favourite professors and how they adapt and communicate, I use the same approach when navigating university. I have been experimenting with various techniques for studying and writing exams, reading and writing research papers, and finding ways to succeed in university, and I’m excited to share my tips, strategies and wisdom for being a successful student.

I am currently the vice president of the York University Mature Student Organization, where we support students in connecting with each other across campus. Our goal is to support both personal and academic growth. I’m self-employed and freelance as a chef/server preparing cuisine from Asia, Africa, Europe and Canada.

Hobbies:
I love watching movies and trying new activities/things/food that stimulate my brain. In my picture, you can see me at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) last year for a York research project. It’s free on Tuesdays for students! I studied/taught Tae Kwon Do in my early years, and I’m a 2nd-degree black belt; it has helped build my confidence and discipline that still resonate in my life today. I appreciate walks in the woods, driving in scenic areas, or an occasional bath to recharge my mind, body, and soul.

Program:
BA Linguistics, LA&PS

Background:
I am in my second year of studies in the Linguistics program. I have over 10 years' professional experience in not-for-profit organizations, as well as volunteer experience ranging from fundraising and facilitation to serving on a board and participating in committees. As a mature student entering post-secondary education, I understand and appreciate the many demands that forces outside of school place on us. The ability to balance schoolwork and family life, among other priorities, is a skill that requires honing, and advocating for oneself is a crucial step toward success. I'm here to help!

Hobbies and Interests:
My love for reading comes first, followed by sports (I play ultimate frisbee, touch rugby and pickleball). I recently picked up crocheting, which I'm afraid has turned somewhat into an obsession. I also enjoy watching romantic comedies, listening to sad girl music, and fair-weather paddleboarding.

Program:
BA Honours Psychology, Faculty of Health

Background:
I’m a fourth-year Honours Psychology student at York University with a passion for mental health, research, and helping others.
As a mature student myself, I know that coming to university isn’t always a straight or simple journey. We may be balancing school with work, family, parenting, finances, and everything else life throws at us. I’m also a mom, so I understand what it’s like to have a full plate while still trying to stay focused on your goals.

My journey at York has taught me that you don’t have to have everything figured out, and you definitely don’t have to navigate university alone. Getting involved on campus, connecting with the right people, asking questions, and using the resources available to me have all played a big part in my experience.

Outside of school, I’m involved in psychology research at York and as a crisis responder. I genuinely enjoy connecting with people, listening to their experiences, and helping them feel supported.

As an ACMAPS Peer Mentor, I want to be someone you can feel comfortable coming to with questions, even the ones you think are “small” or that you feel like you should already know the answer to. Whether you need help finding a resource, getting more involved at York, figuring out how to balance everything, or just want to talk to someone who understands the mature student experience, I’m here to help make your journey feel a little less overwhelming and a lot more connected.

Hobbies/Interests:
When I’m not studying, I love spending time with my child, trying new restaurants and foods, listening to music, travelling and spending time with family and friends.

Background:
Throughout my university experience, I have developed a strong interest in supporting students as they navigate university life and find their place within the York community. Through my academic, professional experiences, I have strengthened my communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. As a peer mentor, I hope to help students feel more confident and comfortable as they adjust to university, connect with available resources, and navigate their York experience.
