ONCAT Capacity Grant

ONCAT Capacity Grant

In spring of 2024, York University was awarded an Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT) Capacity Grant to support the creation of a Transfer Student Hub at the University.

The project comprised the creation of student-facing supports and resources (including orientations, resource guides and mentoring and referral supports) and shareable resources (including literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, orientation slides and plans for a peer mentoring program).

These resources are made available to sector partners below for reference and to support the creation of services and supports for transfer students in universities and colleges across the province.

Resources

To develop the Transfer Student Hub, we conducted research and compiled our findings into two key documents: "Overview of Literature – Transfer Student Experience" and "A Scholarly Overview of Transfer Student Literature – Annotated Bibliography."

The Annotated Bibliography offers brief summaries of each article, which are useful for identifying relevant sources. The Overview consolidates key insights, including topics like transfer shock, and highlights the need for transfer student programming.

We hosted a Transfer Student Orientation in Fall 2024 and an Information Session in Fall 2025. To support these events, we created a plan for Transfer Student Orientation, outlining the importance, benefits and implementation steps of the event. This plan can guide similar orientations at other institutions.

We’ve also included our Transfer Student Orientation 2025 slide deck, covering key topics like transfer credit assessment, time management and personal well-being, which can serve as an example for creating similar slides. An adaptation guide of the Transfer Student Orientation Slide Deck has also been included, which can be used in conjunction with our slide deck. This guide provides a brief overview of each slide, explaining its purpose and offering guidance on how the slides can be adapted at other institutions.

Lastly, we’ve provided a Transfer Student Information Session recording, which offers insight into how the session was delivered.

After completing our research, we determined that the development of a resource guide is essential for supporting transfer students at York University. This guide provides key information to help transfer students navigate their new environment. We’ve included a plan for the Transfer Student Resource Guide, outlining its importance, benefits and implementation steps. Additionally, we’ve provided our guide in both print and digital formats as examples for reference.

A Transfer Student Peer Mentor Program Plan was developed to guide the creation of a peer mentoring program at York University. The plan includes an overview of the program, supported by transfer student literature, and a step-by-step implementation guide. It also offers ideas for structuring a similar program. Additionally, we’ve provided a "Transfer Student Peer Mentor Training Package" with a slide deck to train mentors on supporting transfer students. Topics include the role of peer mentorship, conflict resolution, diversity and inclusion, campus resources and more.

An adaptation guide of the Transfer Student Peer Mentor Training Package has also been included, which can be used in conjunction with our slide deck. This guide provides a brief overview of each slide, explaining its purpose and offering guidance on how the slides can be adapted at other institutions.
