Well-being and YU Episode #10 | Reframing Ability

Well-being and YU Episode

Reframing Ability

Ability is a wide-ranging spectrum. So, in order to create a universal design that is inclusive for all, we should first understand the needs of everyone within that spectrum.

How should we communicate with a person that has a disability? How should we refer to people to have disabilities? Is “person with a disability” ok, or is that not inclusive? How about viewing disability as a spectrum instead of a binary: would that help or hinder a person with a disability in accessing accommodations? Who can even access accommodations? If you don't have an official paper proving the need for accommodation, can you still get support?

If you have previously asked one of these questions, then this episode is for you.

Our host Susu B. recently had the pleasure of interviewing Ray Peart, York's Autism Program Coordinator. Using his expertise in conversations around Universal Design Learning (UDL), Ray outlines social, lingual and academic perspectives on how we can approach- and reframe -ability.
