Kindness: A Black History Month Special

At times the world can be unkind and, as we approach Black History Month, we reflect on the historical resistance to unkind behaviours. However, our guest approaches adversity with faith that there is power in kindness.

In this episode, our host Susu B. converses with Black-identifying York University student Nebiyou Timotewos, speaker of the Kindness tour, and founder of the Brothers-4-Brothers mentorship program and Communities Care non-profit organisation. Nebiyou’s story, although full of challenges as he navigates intense circumstances including war and death, highlights our ability to not only rise from the ashes but to also help others in doing the same. All through kindness.

The fight-or-flight response for survival can indeed be replaced with the kindness response for success.

There is a power in kindness.

— Nebiyou Timotewos

Support Black student achievement

Student Financial Services (SFS) is committed to your success and strives to provide the financial assistance you need to meet your academic goals. To address the systemic barriers Black students face in post-secondary education, York University has created a special program aimed at increasing financial supports and opportunities available to Black students.

Student Counselling, Health and Well-being (SCHW) helps you build resilience and realize your full potential while maximizing your journey as a York student. Manage the challenges of university life by accessing supports including free walk-in counseling, peer consulting, workshops and more. Students are welcome to express their preference to meet with counsellors of a particular identity (e.g., Black, male, female, LGBTQ2S+).
