The Centre for Student Community and Leadership Development (SCLD) assists students with their transition into university life and ensures their continued growth and engagement throughout their time at York. SCLD provides the tools and guidance to do this through our extensive offering of programs and workshops.
From transition programming and wellness to leadership skills, community building and involvement, SCLD is committed to fostering an environment in which students are empowered to be successful.

Our guiding values are respect, excellence, innovation, collaboration, accountability, care and inclusion.
Our Teams, Programs and Resources
Orientation and First-Year Transition
SCLD’s commitment to students’ successful transition into university life is reflected in new student transition and Orientation Week events. We believe the best way to start your university life is to get familiar with all the great services York has to offer while meeting new students just like yourself.
Parents and Family Programming
Research proves that parent, supporter and family involvement is an important resource that improves a student’s productivity. At SCLD, we believe that a student’s supporters play a key role in their success.
Student Clubs and Organizations
The full university experience is not complete without a healthy balance of engagement in activities outside the classroom. The Student Engagement Team facilitates the introduction to a wide array of student run clubs and organizations. Whether you want to start your own or join an one of the 350+ existing ones, getting involved in student organizations is a great way to make friends, get involved outside the classroom, and make lifelong memories.
Community Engagement and Resources
The community ambassador team is your go to help desk at the university. Located in the centre of Vari Hall, the community ambassadors are here to answer all of your questions and have you participate in community building events.
Student Leadership
Leadership is not positional, it’s a process – and everyone can be a leader! Become part of a community of leaders at York and develop your capacity to lead in and outside the classroom.
