Applewood Heights Black Excellence Evening
On February 5th, 2026, we at Black Excellence at York University (BE YU) were proud to attend the annual Black Excellence Evening hosted by Applewood Heights Secondary School.
Our BE YU Peer Mentors, Maryam and Karina, represented our community at this inspiring event. The evening began with a tasting menu for all attendees, followed by a powerful keynote address that set the tone for celebration and reflection. The night concluded with a Post-Secondary and Community Partners Fair, where students and families connected with institutions and organizations to explore future pathways and opportunities.
It was a meaningful evening dedicated to celebrating Black excellence, fostering community connections, and supporting the next generation of leaders.
Black History Month with YUEats and BE YU
On February 4, we at Black Excellence at York University (BE YU) were proud to collaborate on a special culinary and cultural experience on campus in celebration of Black History Month.
Participants joined the Executive Chef and Dietitian Dahlia to learn how to prepare Senegalese Black Eyed-Pea Salad (Saladu Nebbe) while exploring the deep cultural roots of this vibrant and meaningful dish. Through a live cooking demonstration, attendees not only discovered the rich history behind Saladu Nebbe, but also engaged in meaningful conversations about Black History Month, our initiatives at BE YU, and upcoming workshops.
It was a powerful afternoon of food, culture, and community. Guests came for the cooking, stayed for the conversation, and left well fed.

Gospel Music Collaboration with Founders College and Black Excellence
On February 10, we at Black Excellence at York University joined Founders College for a special Gospel Music Collaboration.
The evening featured soulful gospel performances and a panel discussion facilitated by BE YU, highlighting students’ experiences in LA&PS programs, the gospel choir, and BE YU student staff. Guests explored the profound impact of gospel music on the Black diaspora, engaged in meaningful conversations, and connected over shared stories and experiences. It was a memorable night of music, reflection, and community.
York University’s Black Health Connect: Panel and Networking
On February 12, we at Black Excellence at York University joined Student Counselling, Health & Well-being, York University Black Alumni Network, and York Federation of Students for Black Health Connect: Panel and Networking in celebration of Black History Month.
The evening brought together four accomplished Black health professionals from diverse fields to share their experiences, insights, and career journeys. Through a panel discussion, Q&A, and roundtable conversation, attendees explored Black health and wellness, identity, and professional growth while fostering community among Black students, staff, faculty, and alumni.
The night concluded with a networking mixer, giving guests the opportunity to connect with panelists, alumni, faculty, and peers, gaining mentorship, guidance, and inspiration. It was an inspiring evening celebrating Black excellence, health, and community.
Rooted in Curls
On January 21, BE YU hosted Rooted in Curls, a dynamic workshop that educated Black students on the rich history, cultural significance, and evolution of Black hair. Participants gained practical tips and techniques for caring for their natural hair, fostering confidence and community through shared knowledge and experience. The workshop also featured guest students Fatima and Rachel, who led a live demonstration showing participants how to braid hair, adding a hands-on and engaging element to the session.
Roundtable Discussion: Black Mature International Student Experience at York University with ACMAPS
On January 27, BE YU and ACMAPS hosted a panel discussion featuring Black mature international students Anatoli Kiriggwajjo Kaddu, Adegbola Tolulope Adekola, and Sherma Edmunds. Panelists shared their experiences navigating their academic journeys at York University, offering powerful reflections on the role of community in shaping identity, building confidence, and fostering resilience. They discussed how leaning on supportive networks helps navigate uncertainty, deepen self-understanding, and grow through challenging experiences. Attendees left the event with a renewed appreciation for staying authentic, embracing community, and cultivating resilience throughout their academic and personal journeys.
Empowering Black Students: BE YU Outreach
Our BE YU Student Success Mentor Leads went from classroom to classroom informing students about Black Excellence at York! These information sessions led by James Ehiagwina, Bereket Cunnison, and Ariel Wilson, highlighted the resources, opportunities, events, and assistance York offers to help Black students succeed during their academic career. These class visits were enlightening, and we hope to reach many more classes in the future!
"Meet a York Student" - Downsview Secondary School
On November 13th, our BE YU Team (Ariel Wilson & Bereket Cunnison) took a trip down to Downsview Secondary School for their annual "Meet a York Student" event with the Grade 11's and 12's! This event allowed BE YU students to share their experiences of what it's like to be a university student, programs York has to offer, and give students some insight on what to expect transitioning from high school to post-secondary. The 'Meet a York Student' event was an amazing opportunity for not only high school students to learn, but for university students to reflect on their last couple of years at York.
We look forward to participating in more events like this in the future!
Celebrating Financial Literacy Month with BE YU!
This November, BE YU hosted two powerful financial literacy events to help students build confidence and take control of their financial futures.
On November 13, BE YU partnered with Mentor Circles for Financial Planning & Budgeting for Student Success, led by YorkU alum and CIBC Financial Advisor Tinotenda Mutsvangwa. Students learned practical strategies for budgeting, saving, building credit, and understanding financial tools like the TFSA and FHSA. Tino also shared his personal journey from York student to financial advisor, offering motivating and actionable guidance.
On November 25, students were invited to Navigating Financial Challenges & Building Resilience, a workshop focused on managing debt, handling unexpected expenses, and making the most of limited income. Tino returned as facilitator, highlighting campus and community resources while helping students develop strong financial habits for long-term stability and peace of mind.
Both sessions were highly informative, empowering, and rooted in supporting student success—especially for those who identify as Black. BE YU is proud to provide these valuable learning opportunities and continue fostering financial resilience within our community.
Navigating School and Personal Stress Workshop
On Friday, November 28th, our BE YU Student Success Mentor Leads (James Ehiagwina & Ariel Wilson) hosted an engaging workshop, helping students learn practical strategies and tools to cope with stress and manage anxiety during the upcoming exam season. In collaboration with the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change, BE YU participants and many other students came together and learned how important prioritizing your mental health as a university student, as well as finding a balance between both academics and personal life. From the engaging activities to group discussions, this workshop brought students together and relieved some tension in regard to stress and anxiety that exam season can bring to post-secondary school students. Not only did students leave this workshop insightful about the mental health resources and planning strategies we had to offer; but they also received complimentary grocery bags at the end!
We can't wait to host another one of these workshops and continue create spaces for students to learn, communicate, and destress in the future.
Paint & Sip with BE YU: A Night of Creativity and Connection
What an unforgettable evening! BE YU’s Paint & Sip event, held in celebration of Well-being Week, brought together students for a night of art, conversation, and self-care.
Led by the incredibly talented Karen Welcome, the guided painting session invited everyone to create a stunning Caribbean seascape at night—complete with calm ocean waves, starry skies, swaying palm trees, and a glowing moon. The atmosphere was relaxed and joy-filled, with refreshments flowing and creativity blooming.
Whether attendees were seasoned artists or simply there to unwind and enjoy the vibes, the event offered a perfect blend of expression, community, and wellness. It was a beautiful way to destress from the pressures of school and recharge in a supportive, inspiring space.
BE YU Welcome Event 2025: Rooted in Excellence
On Thursday, August 14, 2025, BE YU celebrated its fifth annual Welcome Event. This year’s event was an inspiring start to the academic year, bringing students together under the theme “Rooted in Excellence.”
The event began with an information session led by April J. Walker, our Inclusion and Academic Success Coordinator, who introduced students to the BE YU Program and highlighted the resources, opportunities, and support available to help them thrive at York. This was followed by a keynote address from BE YU alum Glory Ohikhena, who challenged and encouraged students to pursue their goals with confidence and purpose.
A panel discussion, facilitated by Damor McQueen and featuring Awwal Abass, Mouna Aden, and James Ehiagwina, rounded out the day. Panelists shared valuable insights into the Black student experience at York and offered strategies for success, growth, and community building.
The Welcome Event also served as a meaningful introduction for Black students to York’s vibrant Black community—a space where excellence is nurtured, celebrated, and shared.
We look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to create spaces where students can learn, grow, and achieve together.
Canadian Black Nurses Alliance (CBNA)
On Tuesday, July 8th, the Canadian Black Nurses Alliance (CBNA) at York University hosted its Summer High School Workshop and BE YU was delighted to participate. This workshop was designed for high school students from Black, Black-identifying, and other racialized backgrounds, with the goal of inspiring interest in healthcare professions. The event was a resounding success.

All About York: Black Student Excellence YU Session
On Thursday, July 24, 2025, BE YU proudly welcomed incoming Black students to the Black Excellence at York University ‘All About York’ session. Held in the Ross South Building, the event was a vibrant gathering designed to empower both incoming and current Black students, while showcasing the many programs, spaces, and resources available to support them.
Whether students were just beginning their academic journey at York or returning for another year, the event provided a meaningful space to feel seen, supported, and valued. Participants engaged in inspiring conversations, learned about key campus services—from wellness to mentorship—and discovered spaces committed to amplifying Black voices and experiences.
More than just an orientation, the event fostered a sense of belonging, as BE YU continues to lay the foundation for lasting relationships and a strong connection within the York University community.
York University Black Grad 2025
Black Grad Celebration 2025 on June 5th was a vibrant celebration of achievement and community. The event opened with a warm welcome from Fikayo Aderoju, President of the York University Black Alumni Network (YUBAN), who congratulated the graduates and set an empowering tone. Miquela Jones followed with a moving performance of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
Professor Uzo Anucha then delivered a powerful keynote, highlighting the dedication required to succeed at York and leaving a lasting impression on all. Representing the graduating class, Awwal Abass gave an inspiring speech about resilience and the shared experiences of Black students.
Graduates proudly walked the stage to cheers from family, friends, and faculty. The celebration concluded with a joyful reception full of laughter, memories, and good food—a true tribute to Black excellence and joy.
Walk with Excellence
On June 11th, the York University TD Community Engagement Centre welcomed the 2025 graduating class from surrounding high schools to celebrate their academic achievements for its 12th annual Walk with Excellence. The Black Excellence at York University (BE YU) team was there to cheer students on and celebrate their success. The day’s festivities included a guided tour of the York University Keele campus and performances the students had prepared. Distinguished students were also awarded by TDSB representatives, and York University faculty and staff, to honour their dedication and hard work. After a day of fun, community, and well-deserved recognition, it is evident that the graduating high school class of 2025 will continue to ‘walk with excellence.’
Robert J. Tiffin Student Leadership Award
Congratulations to James Ehiagwina, one of BE YU’s Student Success Peer Mentor Leads, on receiving the prestigious Robert J. Tiffin Student Leadership Award! His outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to student success have made a lasting impact on the York University community. BE YU is incredibly proud to celebrate James’s achievements and the inspiring legacy he continues to build as a role model for his peers.
Empower Her Future
The BE YU Team hosted a Paint and Sip Night in honour of Well-being Week at York titled Empower Her Future, in collaboration with the Black Women in Law Association at York (BWLA) on March 26, 2025. This event allowed BE YU students, BWLA members, and guests to foster relationships while winding down as the semester came to an end. From awesome paintings to creative conversations, Empower Her Future was a reminder that women’s wellness must be prioritized on a consistent basis. We hope to continue these beautiful initiatives moving forward
Mentor Circles X BE YU – Debit & Credit Management Workshop
On March 27th, BE YU teamed up with Mentor Circles to host a financial literacy workshop, led by Tinotenda Mutsvangwa—a York University alum and current client representative at CIBC. Tino brought valuable insights from both his academic and professional experience, focusing on smart credit and debit management for students.
The session covered everything from building a strong credit history while in school to unlocking hidden strategies for accessing financial support. Tino also walked attendees through key steps to building a solid financial foundation for life after university—like paying off student loans, preparing to buy a home, and keeping a strong credit score for unexpected needs.
The workshop was held with support from Issa Abdi and April J. Walker, and highlighted just how important financial literacy is for students at York. Events like this help pave the way for brighter, financially stable futures after graduation.
A Celebration of Black Excellence at York
The York Alumni Engagement Team, in collaboration with the York-TD Community Engagement Centre, the BE YU Team, York’s Black Alumni Network (YUBAN), and various university departments, proudly hosted A Celebration of Black Excellence at York on Tuesday, February 25. This inspiring evening featured a dynamic panel discussion with York University students, staff, and alumni, who shared invaluable insights on the significance of Black excellence across all spaces. The event also showcased a captivating performance by the Nigerian Student Association (NSA), adding to the vibrant atmosphere. Attendees eagerly seized the opportunity to network, celebrate achievements, and engage in meaningful conversations about empowerment, representation, and the enduring impact of Black excellence.
DECIEM’s Creating Connections: Black Excellence in Focus
The BE YU Team was invited to DECIEM’s Creating Connections: Black Excellence in Focus, a Community Networking Event on February 26, 2025.
This event was designed to create space for youth to meet, network, and engage with one another, particularly in celebrating Black excellence. It offered a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, share insights, and build relationships that inspire growth and collaboration.
The night featured an inspiring panel with notable speakers, including R&B artist Jon Vinyl, Kimberly Knight and Shanelle McKenzie, founders of The Villij, and Brittney Frederick, co-owner of The Ode Hotel. The event was filled with engaging conversations, a fun and interactive photobooth, and an exciting surprise - free samples of DECIEM products for guests to enjoy.
Overall, it was a memorable evening that fostered meaningful connections and highlighted the brilliance within the Black community.
Black and Bold: Education, Empowerment, and Excellence
On Thursday, February 27, 2025, BE YU in collaboration with the Founders College, LA&PS wrapped up Black History Month with a Black and Bold event under the theme "Education, Empowerment, and Excellence". The event explored the evolution of education, focusing on Black experiences, access, and empowerment, where both students and faculty members got to share their thoughts and insights on the matter. We also had Timothy Spokes, a York Alumni who performed a spoken word piece and hosted interactive activities with the group that allowed the guests to learn more about influential black leaders in Canada.
Roundtable Discussion: Black Mature Student Experience at York U
Earlier in February, to kick off Black History Month, we hosted an honorary round table discussion in collaboration with the Atkinson Centre for Part-time Students (ACMAPS) hosted an honorary roundtable discussion focused on the experiences of mature students in university. The conversation highlighted key challenges and strategies for success, such as navigating academia as an adult, balancing family responsibilities with coursework, and thriving in classrooms often dominated by younger peers. The discussion was moderated by April J. Walker, with perspectives shared by mature students, specifically Clifton Grant, Samantha Maxwell, Adaeze Emmanuel, and Omar Taylor. The event fostered a sense of community and empowerment, reinforcing the message that success knows no age limit.
Navigating Racism: The Black International Student Experience
On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, BE YU hosted its International Student panel under the theme “Navigating Racism: The Black International Student Experience”. The panel was very timely, engaging, and thought-provoking as the panelists and those in attendance engaged with the questions and discussions centered on racism. The event was insightful and left those in attendance more knowledgeable about racism as well as coping mechanisms.
TDSB Black Student Post-Secondary Engagement Symposium:
On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, the BE YU Team attended the TDSB Black Student Post-Secondary Engagement Symposium with the goal of contributing to the mission of the TDSB Centre of Excellence for Black Students Achievement towards the proliferation of Black high school students' interest in the pursuit of post-secondary education.
A key fragment of BE YU’s contribution is the honor to serve as a panelist, where they shared key knowledge with high school students, resources available for Black students at York, and how BE YU is investing in the excellence and success of Black students at York academically, professionally, and culturally/socially. BE YU also got the opportunity to interact with students on a personal level, where they provided support and guidance for students who are interested in York programs.
Tea, Tunes, and Talks Event:
On Friday, November 29, 2024, BE YU hosted its vibrant second annual Tea, Tunes, and Talks social event, where the energy was high and connections were made! BE YU participants came together to mingle with both student-staff and fellow students, sharing laughs and insights. Between lively games, thought-provoking hot takes, and plenty of good vibes, it was the perfect opportunity to unwind and escape the daily grind of university life. With such a memorable experience, we’re already counting down the days to next November’s third annual event!
Exploring Black Men’s Mental Health Challenges
On Tuesday October 22nd, BE YU’s Student Success Mentor Leads Awwal Abass and Damor McQueen, hosted a mental health event focused on the wellness of Black men. In collaboration with Black Future Lawyers at York University, Canadian Black Nurses Alliances, and TD York University Community Engagement Centre, this event featured critical discussions between students, Greg N. Leslie, a registered Social Worker, Psychotherapist and Consultant, and Byron Gray, Manager of York University TD Community Engagement Centre.
This workshop focused on the different challenges affecting Black Men in our modern society, ranging from navigating societal expectations, to addressing men’s mental health topics. Embedded in this event was also a social session for students to socialize with one another while taking some time from the busyness of their day.
Black Men's Grooming in Focus: Past, Present, & Future
BE YU explored Black men’s fashion and grooming under the theme “Black Men’s Grooming in Focus: Past, Present & Future” on Thursday October 24th. The event featured an open discussion on the evolution of men’s fashion and food galore! Attendees left more informed and knowledgeable about the evolution of Black men’s fashion and grooming. This event was a success.
Tabling and Treats
On Tuesday October 31st, the BE YU office buzzed with excitement as we hosted a Halloween-themed tabling! Students and community members came together to enjoy some festive fun, all while learning more about BE YU and indulging in sweet treats.
The tabling event was full of highlights including delicious treats, lively conversations, and a true sense of community and belonging. This Halloween gathering perfectly captured the creative spirit and vibrant energy of the BE YU team. There were lots of laughs, plenty of learning, and, of course, lots of tasty treats!
President's Reception
President and Vice Chancellor of York University, Rhonda Lenton, recently hosted the President’s Reception for International students, which was nothing short of a success! It was an evening filled with York University pride as international students were welcomed to York by President Lenton and received inspirational from our very own, Damor McQueen, who was this year’s student speaker. The event was a huge success!
BE YU Fourth Annual Welcome Event
The Black Excellence at York University (BE YU) celebrated its fourth annual Welcome Event this past Thursday, and we are indebted to everyone who attended.
The Event under the Theme "Success: Recipe for Excellence" was hosted to welcome all Black-identifying students at York University in anticipation of the upcoming semester.
The Keynote was honored by Andrew Brown, Student Engagement Coordinator with the Department of Student Community and Leadership Development, where he shared his perspective on what community means to him, how Black youths can succeed in their community at large, and how we can build the future of Black youth through community work.
Lastly, academic, and professional workshops were embedded in the event. Our first workshop hosted by Jessica Okoeidon examined how to navigate post-secondary as a Black student for future success. Our second workshop was hosted by Nebiyou Timotewos and focused on how to attain leadership by balancing Academics and extracurricular activities. Our last workshop was hosted by Jacob Lolarga and Madison Edwards focusing on Launching Tech Careers: by presenting various opportunities the York University Career Ready Program has.

Meet & Greet with Ryan Turnbull
The BE YU Team had the honour of meeting Federal MP and Parliamentary Secretary, Ryan Turnbull during his tour of the Jane and Finch Social Innovation Hub. The MP spoke to the group shortly, telling us about his political career. He also got an overview of the BE YU Program and the BSSLP students' project, and we ended the day with a fun group photo.
Walk with Excellence
On Thursday, June 6th, York University welcomed the 2024 graduating students from various high schools near the Jane and Finch communities. The Black Excellence York University (BE YU) Team were all honored to take part in this event as they welcomed the participating schools. Notable presences at the event were esteem representatives from the TDSB and York University, such as the likes of Dr. Monday Gala, Karen Murray, and Dr. Carl James. The event's highlights ranged from words of encouragement from York University Administrations and the Toronto District School Board Representatives, as well as award of recognition to students who have demonstrated tenacity, academic excellence and leadership within the school and communities. It is undeniable that the “Walk of Excellence” is a testament of excellence and hidden gems that are embedded in the Jane and Finch communities.
Black Graduation Celebration
York University’s 2024 Black Graduation Celebration on June 6th was the ultimate event to showcase Black Excellence. The event was hosted by Fikayo Aderoju, President of YUBAN. There were also remarks from Dr. Andrea Davis and Divine Mokuye, representative of the graduating class. Additionally, musical performance by Vanier College Productions, delicious food and a very in-demand photo booth which saw guests posing for quick group photos all added to an enjoyable experience. The event was a success! Attendees left inspired and motivated.

Summer 2024 Peer Leader Training (PLT)
During the summer, the Black Excellence at York University administration was honored to participate in the Summer 2024 Peer Leader Training (PLT). The workshop included a keynote session by Mathew R. Morris, author of “Black Boys Like Me”. Following this, BE YU’s Inclusion and Academic Success Coordinator, April J Walker conversated with Matthew on the theme of Belonging to What? – a critical interview that bespeaks the potential of a young aspiring boy, who is now a trailblazer, and an author.
Black Excellence after York
The theme “Black Excellence after York” was befitting as this event, hosted by the York University Black Alumni Network (YUBAN) in collaboration with BE YU, was nothing short of Black Excellence. The event featured brief remarks from both organisations, games, food, a poetic performance, and informative sessions centred around financial, arts, music, women empowerment and academic excellence. Both alumni and current students in attendance left informed and empowered. The event was a huge success.
BE YU Movie Night
The BE YU team hosted a screening of the movie "The Hate U Give" to kick off our Black History Month celebration. We watched the film and had an amazing time. This event brought students together to connect and honor Black History Month through the beauty of film.
Curls & Coils: Everything Black Hair (Pt.1)
The BE YU team and BE YU mentees came together to celebrate and share their experiences with black hair and politics surrounding hair within the black community at “Curls & Coils: Everything Black Hair (Pt.1).” The event featured plenty of relatable discussion, special guest Natasha Sheppard – CEO & Founder of Kerl Beauty, and raffle prizes and freebies of numerous hair products donated by Kams Beauty.
Navigating Blackness within the Workplace
BE YU and the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change hosted a Black History Month panel event on “Navigating Blackness within the Workplace”. The audience got the chance to listen to diverse voices sharing their experiences, and tips on overcoming challenges and how to thrive in the workplace/school. It was an engaging and insightful event!
BE YU presents Thriving as a Newcomer in Canada
To kickoff our Black History Month series, Black International students from various programs shared their personal experiences and insights on navigating challenges as international Black students in Canada. Valuable perspectives on their journeys, coping mechanisms, and advice were given to students for a successful transition.
Tea, Tunes & Talks
The BE YU mentees joined the BE YU Team for the first social event of the semester; “Tea, Tunes & Talks”, held at the EUC lounge. The Team was also joined by Fikayo Aderoju (left), President of the York University Black Alumni Network (YUBAN). It was a day filled with games, food and fun!
Tour of Glendon Campus
The BE YU Team made a visit to York University’s Glendon Campus along with students and staff of the Black Summer Student Leadership Program (BSSLP). The visit included a tour of the campus and ended with a few competitive games. It was a day well spent!

Walk of Excellence
York University recently hosted over 500 high school students for the 10th staging of the annual “Walk of Excellence” and BE YU was glad to join in the celebrations. In the photo, is the BE YU team along with Olivia Chow, mayoral candidate for Toronto. The event was quite insightful and fun and saw performances from student representatives from each school. There were also a number of bursary awards that sought to recognize the “excellence” of some of the students. The Walk of Excellence was a great success and provided an amazing opportunity for students, teachers, staff, and others who were in attendance to engage, network and have fun!
